Fireproof

Last night I was watching one of my favorite movies, Fireproof.  For those of you who have not seen this film, it is about the marriage of a young couple, Caleb (played by Kirk Cameron) and Katherine (played by Erin Bethea) Holt.  Their marriage is truly struggling, Katherine thinks she wants out and Caleb does not feel wholly opposed to the idea.  There is a young doctor who works at the same hospital where Katherine is a PR rep, as soon as he knows that Katherine’s marriage is having a hard time he starts to move in.
There is this scene in the movie where an older lady who works at the same hospital tries to offer Katherine a small bit of kind, friendly, relationship advice regarding the doctor.  She reminds Katherine that the doctor is trying to woo her whilst she is still married and asks her what makes her think he would not do the same thing later with another woman.  The thought of him possibly doing the same thing later to someone else is not, however, what would give me pause if I were Katherine.  I would be angry with a man doing this because chasing a woman while she is still married, regardless of how that relationship is going, is completely disrespectful.  It shows an utter lack of care for the woman’s reputation, values and character.  A man willing to do this is not honorable.

  1. Jordan: I will try this again. I think you are looking at a symptom. I think it is Eph 5:33. Husbands love your wives, wives respect your husbands. When this occurs you will have happy marriages. Eggersons, "Love and Respect" and the University of Washington's 20 year marriage study of over 2,000 marriages lasting 20 to 40 years to the same spouse support this position. A vulerable wife and a predatory male are symptoms of a weakened concept of the marriage vow, till death. Media coverage of short term celebrity marriages of months, days, or hours allow the concept of unfaithfulness to occur.

    1. I agree, but we often have to confront the symptons before fixing the problem. People don't tend to want to fix what they don't realize is wrong.
I also think that you should start a blog. You have so much insight into subjects and I always enjoy hearing your opinions! I hope you consider the idea. :)
